School Boards Set the Direction for Schools

As I’ve gotten out and started to meet voters at their doors I had several people ask me what school board members do. In Washington State, a school board has certain legal responsibilities and is directed by law (RCW 28A.150.230) to adopt policies that do each of the following:

Establish performance criteria and an evaluation process

Provide information to the local community

Determine the final assignment of staff

Determine instructional hours

Determine the allocation of staff time

Establish final curriculum standards

Evaluate teaching materials

Check out this chart that highlights the differences between the roles of the school board and the Superintendent.
